A Bronx school celebrated the achievements and independence of their blind and visually impaired students with a walk Friday for National White Cane Safety Day.

6ds agoA Bronx school celebrated the achievements and independence of their blind and visually impaired students with a walk Friday for National White Cane Safety Day.
Students from the Lavelle School for the Blind were joined by elected officials and advocates to walk as agents of change on the special day aimed at raising awareness and independence for the blind and visually impaired community. The event was in person for the first time since 2019.
The school's executive director, Dr. Rebecca Renshaw, said celebrating with her students on White Cane Day is always emotional.
The white cane was invented 100 years ago in 1921, and Oct. 15 was named a national holiday by Congress in 1964. After today's walk, students got medals as they crossed the finish line.
