July is Fibroid Awareness Month. Fibroids are benign tumors on the uterus which can cause a number of physical and mental health problems.
One Bronx woman and her doctor are making other people aware of the signs, symptoms and treatment options. Donna Akuamoah was diagnosed with fibroids by Dr. Charles Ascher-Walsh at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The diagnosis came after years of heavy periods, cramping, bloating, constipation and blatter issues. Akuamoah had an abdominal myomectomy five weeks ago to have her fibroids removed.
The C-section-like procedure allows her to maintain the ability to have children going forward. Akuamoah and Dr. Ascher-Walsh want other women to know they don't need to live with fibroid pain and that there are many non-invasive options available.
The doctor says that birth control, uterine fibroid embolization, and other non-invasive radiology procedures can all help treatment.
