Free legal help is available to Brooklyn immigrants at the Medgar Evers College Immigration Center in Crown Heights.
Counselors give advice on issues ranging from citizenship to dealing with domestic violence and helping immigrant children thrive in Brooklyn schools. Workshops are also offered. Immigrants only have to pay application fees to the U.S. government.
The center takes walk-ins and appointments, but counselors warn immigrants that their best chance of becoming legal citizens depends on having relatives in the U.S. or being married.
