Police say they have arrested the driver in a fatal hit-and-run involving an ambulance in Midwood.

Michael Gontar, 42, was charged on Wednesday, nearly three months after he allegedly hit 44-year-old Cherry Cayetano Sobel near Ocean Avenue and Avenue O.

The tragic incident was captured on surveillance video. It shows the ambulance turning onto Ocean Avenue at the same moment that Sobel steps into the street to cross. It unfolded just before 6:40 a.m. on April 2.

Paramedics rushed the 44-year-old to the same hospital that the ambulance originated from: Maimonides Medical Center.

On the day of the crash, Maimonides confirmed to News 12 that the ambulance involved belonged to them. In a statement, the hospital said the EMT crew involved had been suspended.

Gontar is now in police custody. He faces failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.
