A slow recovery continues as Thursday was more than five degrees warmer than Wednesday, and another bump-up in temperatures is expected for Friday. The core of the cold will continue to slowly ease and move out of the borough by this weekend.
Another frigid night, but not as brutal, is on the way overnight into Friday morning. Lows will be near 20 degrees, feeling like the mid-teens, a notable improvement from the sub-zero feels earlier in the week. Layering and covering up will be key out the door once again in the morning, even if the feel is slightly warmer. Frostbite and hypothermia can still occur without proper protection from the cold in under 30 minutes.
A slow recovery continues Friday afternoon, with highs on either side of the freezing mark, 32 degrees. If highs remain at or below 32 degrees, it would be the fifth consecutive day with at-or-below freezing temperatures. The last time it was this cold for this long was 2017-2018 with 14 consecutive days, and 346 total hours.
Temperatures in the 30s are back for the weekend, feeling noticeably warmer by Sunday with highs returning to the typical high for this time of year, at 39 degrees. Another coastal storm is likely well offshore Friday as the pattern remains "too cold to snow" for the area. The same is likely for next Monday. Next opportunity for rain or snow is not until midweek next week at the earliest, with a better chance at a sizeable storm the following weekend. Details remain limited but stick with the News 12 Storm Watch Team for updates next week on any potential winter storms.
