Brooklyn is in the spotlight this week as a contender to host the Democratic National Convention in 2016.

DNC members are in the borough for a two-day site visit reviewing hotels, transportation options and the Barclays Center as a potential venue for the estimated 50,000 delegates, party activists and media expected for the convention.

A number of city officials and local business leaders, including NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton and Borough President Eric Adams, welcomed the members in an attempt to sway their choice.

Convention officials say they would need around 17,000 hotel rooms within a close drive to the convention. However, there are only about 3,500 rooms in Brooklyn, meaning other boroughs would be relied upon for accommodations.

Officials also say New York City has the best transportation system in the United States to get the delegates to the convention.

A final decision on the location is expected to be made at the end of this year or in early 2015. New York is one of five cities in the running along with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Birmingham, Alabama; Columbus, Ohio; and Phoenix, Arizona.
