News 12 was told the lawsuit is seeking $5 million in damages on behalf of 22-year-old Maniyja Love, the alleged victim.
Love’s attorneys say she was assaulted by an officer in Crown Heights and left bruised and beaten. They say their fight is about more than a lawsuit.
"Unacceptable behavior for a member of the NYPD. The district attorney’s office must open a criminal investigation in with regard to the actions of this police officer,” says attorney Sanford Rubenstein. “Police brutality in this city will not stop until police officers are held accountable criminally and go to jail.”
Love's legal team and activists who support her stood outside of the 71st Precinct chanting “no justice, no peace” on Friday. Supporters also took to the podium to say it’s time officers are held accountable.
Love told News 12 last week that the alleged July 30 violent traffic stop left her in pain. She says she is still questioning why she was stopped along with a friend who was also in the car at the time.
Love shared pictures that were taken after the alleged incident which appear to show smears of blood on her face.
Police told News 12 they will review the lawsuit if they are served.
