One of New York City's homeless shelters unveiled a new library in Brownsville Wednesday as part of a citywide reading program.
The Flagstone Family Center is benefiting from the Department of Homeless Services Library Pilot Project, which is a collaboration between the Department of Education, the nonprofit group CAMBA, Scholastic and the New York Public Library.
The program has built 30 libraries so far in shelters for families and children throughout the city, and Scholastic has donated more than 3,000 books.
As part of the program, an early literacy coordinator from the Brooklyn Public Library comes in once a week to selected shelters in the borough to show parents how to read to their kids.
