A major investigation is underway in Crown Heights after police say a driver repeatedly rammed a car into the doors of the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters on Eastern Parkway. The incident happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday at 770 Eastern Parkway, a site with deep meaning for the Jewish community. The timing was especially significant, as people from around the world were in the neighborhood for a major religious observance. Video shows a dark-colored Honda Accord with New Jersey license plates backing up and slamming into the building’s doors multiple times. One of the doors was knocked off its hinges. Police say officers who were already assigned to security at the location quickly pulled the driver out of the car and took him into custody. The NYPD bomb squad was called in as a precaution and conducted a full sweep of the vehicle. Police say no explosives or weapons were found, and no one was injured. By around 5:40 a.m. Thursday, the car had been towed away from the scene. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the incident is now being investigated as a possible hate crime. City leaders also weighed in overnight. Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the incident and voiced support for the Jewish community. “Antisemitism has no place in our city, and violence or intimidation against Jewish New Yorkers is unacceptable,” Mamdani said. “I stand in solidarity with the Crown Heights Jewish community.” Witnesses who were nearby say they knew something was wrong right away. “As soon as I saw him ramming the door, I realized this wasn’t an accident,” said Yechi Hanelech, a Crown Heights resident. “It’s definitely not something that should be happening, but it reminds us we have to be strong.” The Crown Heights Shomrim community safety group posted on X claiming the driver had previously been arrested in New Jersey after trying to enter a synagogue. News 12 is working to confirm that information with New Jersey authorities. Police have not confirmed that claim. As of Wednesday morning, investigators say they are still trying to determine why this happened and what motivated the driver. Police have not said whether the act was intentional or released any details about the suspect’s background. Out of caution, the NYPD says extra security remains in place around houses of worship across the city.
