Part of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel has reopened more than two weeks after it was flooded by 43 million gallons of seawater during Hurricane Sandy.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) announced that the eastern tube of the former Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel is open to car traffic both ways, except during rush hours when only one-way traffic is allowed.
Vehicles heading into Manhattan can use the thoroughfare from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. Those lanes will then switch to Brooklyn-bound traffic from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. One lane is also being reserved for express buses, and trucks are still not allowed access.
The western side of the tunnel will remain closed for extensive repairs. A timetable for its reopening has not yet been given.
