Even though Monday was a day off from work for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, many Brooklyn residents spent the day working to honor his memory.Seven hundred volunteers from Brooklyn and the rest of the city took part in a number of community service projects in Bedford-Stuyvesant, including the revitalization of Boys and Girls High School and the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Center.Mayor Bloomberg (R-NYC) says King urged the world to join together to strengthen communities, end poverty and build dignity and respect among all people. The executive director of the mayor's volunteer center says "days-on" such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day not only pay tribute to Dr. King, but also the everyday heroes in Brooklyn and the rest of the city.
