City Island’s small businesses receive aid after pandemic hurts mom-and-pop shops

Council member Marjorie Velazquez joined Jonnell Doris, commissioner of New York City Small Business Services, on Thursday for a tour of the area where business saw a sharp decline during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many of City Island’s shops took an unprecedented hit to their business during the pandemic. Business owners took the opportunity on Thursday to talk with the commissioner directly about what city resources they need.
For theater manager Jerry Landy, it’s assistance in becoming a not-for-profit to serve the community. He hopes to hold a “cinema on the sound” community event.
While some new businesses did open along City Island Avenue during the pandemic, there are still plenty of empty storefronts. Small Business Services says it’s about helping business owners get the grants and guidance they need.
