City leaders say NYC faces all-time low in major crime
The NYPD said its top focus for guns is in the Bronx because the borough accounts for 37% of the shootings in the city.

New York City leaders celebrated a milestone on Tuesday, announcing that major crime is at an all-time low.
Mayor Eric Adams said between January and May, there were the fewest shootings and homicides in recorded history; and so far this year, the NYPD has taken more than 2,200 illegal guns off the streets.
The mayor showed off some of those guns, sitting them on tables during Tuesday’s news conference at City Hall.
Adams also focused on a small, foldable handgun that officers seized and said weapons like that are what police are up against.
Officials said they’re still working to stop gun violence among minors because the younger the age of the shooter, the higher the crime rate.

“That’s why we put 42% of the [NYPD] graduating class into the Bronx,” said Michael Lipetri, NYPD chief of Crime Control Strategies. “And that’s why the 44th Precinct had no shootings for the month of May. That’s incredible.”
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said this Memorial Day Weekend was the safest on record for gun violence citywide, and they’re hoping to carry that throughout the summer.
