Parking for Downtown Brooklyn residents could be getting tougher if the city passes a plan to reduce the required number of parking spots for new developments.

All new buildings are currently required by law to provide parking for 40 percent of its residents, but according to a city study, only 20 percent of people living downtown actually own a vehicle. Officials say that leaves plenty of empty spaces.

The city says that it hopes that reducing the requirement will also cut the cost of affordable housing units because the developer won't have to spend as much money on a parking garage.

Borough President Marty Markowitz and Community Board 2 will review the proposal over the next two months.
