The New Utrecht Library in Bensonhurst is set to be torn down and replaced with a new building that will house both a modern library and nearly 250 units of affordable housing, city officials announced.
“This ambitious project will deliver affordable housing, high-quality services and a state-of-the-art library, all in one location,” Mayor Eric Adams said.
Deputy Mayor Adolfo Carrión Jr. added that the project is designed to serve the community directly.
“They live here. They work here. This is their neighborhood. The host community will have an opportunity to shape this development,” he said.
The city and the Brooklyn Public Library kicked off a public engagement process on Wednesday, including online questionnaires, tabling events and community workshops.
City officials say construction won’t start any time soon, but officials want the community to shape the vision now.
