NEW THIS AFTERNOON: Newark Airport, JFK and Islip have officially reached Blizzard criteria for several hours overnight and through the morning. While visibility will improve as snow tapers off, the wind will continue this evening.
For Central Park, we've had visibility that meets blizzard requirements, and also gusts that meet it, but not enough consecutive hours together to be officially a blizzard at Central Park.
LATEST SNOW TOTALS AS OF 12 PM:
We've already accumulated 16-20" + of snowfall across the city with an additional 1-2" of snowfall expected through this afternoon. A major winter storm has moved into New York City and will continue to pummel the borough through the afternoon. Snow has quickly accumulated and and travel conditions have become dangerous. Very low visibility is making travel still very dangerous through this evening.
We've had some reported peak wind gusts over 60 MPH across the city. Even though, the snow will be ending around 2PM, these winds, combined with the piles of snow of the ground is bringing the threat of drifting snow through this evening. Very low visibility is making travel still very dangerous through this evening. Downed trees and powerlines have been reported across the city. Residents should be prepared for difficult travel and disruptions to public transportation through tomorrow.
After the storm departs, the snow removal starts, but the cleanup will take days due to the significant snowfall. This is also a very heavy wet snow, also known as 'heart attack snow'. If you suffer from any underlying health issues, it is advised to get someone else to help remove the snow from your property and around your vehicle. Hundreds of flight cancellations and delays will continue for days as well. On the plus side, Tuesday will be drier with sunshine but very cold with temperatures in the low 30s. Unfortunately, once the snow melts during the day, it will refreeze at night due to temperatures near or below freezing. A passing storm system will bring snow and rain showers Wednesday into Thursday. Minor accumulation is expected. The snow is expected to melt throughout the week with temperatures climbing back into the 40s through the weekend. Stay tuned for updates.
