A Bushwick clinic is working to provide quality primary health care to Brooklyn before minor problems lead to major issues.

The Broadway Family Health Center opened its doors in June, offering basic services to nearby residents. Experts say the clinic is needed since many similar facilities have closed their doors in central Brooklyn.

A city study shows many disparities exist between minority and white residents when it comes to health. Findings show 35 percent of Bushwick residents rate themselves in only fair or poor health.

The neighborhood's diabetes rate is also high. While cancer deaths are low in the area, experts believe so-called manageable diseases, such as asthma and diabetes, can be fatal for people who lack access to primary care physicians.

City figures also show people with higher incomes often have better health care. Officials estimate one in three Bushwick residents live in poverty.
