People in the Sunset Park community are celebrating a victory after their opposition to expanding Industry City forced developers to scrap their plans.

Developers are not moving forward with the proposal to expand Industry City by more than 1 million square feet after strong pushback from the community backed by elected officials.

Developers were ready to invest $1 billion over the next 12 years into the expansion requiring a rezoning of the area.

Four Brooklyn congress members, including Nydia Velazquez, released a letter to the City Council in opposition of the expansion, saying it would negatively impact real estate and make displacement and rising rent worse in the community.

People in the area tell News 12 they are happy the plans are not moving forward.

Some Brooklyn residents believe the development could have been beneficial to the borough as supporters of the expansion say it would bring jobs to the area that are needed now more than ever because of the pandemic.
