Connecticut confirmed that its first case of the omicron COVID-19 variant is linked to a convention that was held in New York City in November.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont says a man in his 60s tested positive for the variant after a family member attended the Anime NYC Convention last month at the Javits Center. He says both individuals were fully vaccinated.

News 12 was told both the man and his family member developed mild symptoms within days of coming in contact with each other. An at-home COVID-19 test and a molecular test confirmed they were both infected. Testing on other family members is now pending.

More than 50,000 people attended the convention. Attendees were asked to wear masks indoors.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, so far the omicron variant has been detected in more than a dozen states. At least eight cases were found in the state of New York, seven of which are in New York City.

Gov. Kathy Hochul urged residents on Saturday to get their booster shot for an extra layer of protection as temperatures get colder this winter and the rest of the holiday season.

Health officials say that early evidence suggests that people who have already had COVID-19 could become re-infected more easily with omicron.
