The city has begun construction of the long-awaited bike lane for the Pulaski Bridge.
The protected bike lane will only be for cyclists, who currently share the space with joggers, walkers and other pedestrians. A barrier will be built to protect the cyclists from vehicles.
The Department of Transportation will also convert the existing shared path into a pedestrian-only walkway.
The DOT says that bicycle traffic on the bridge more than doubled between 2009 and 2013, going from almost 500 to 1,000 bikes each day.
City officials say they hope to open the bike lane by the end of the year.
