The family of a slain bodega owner reopened their Crown Heights shop Sunday.

Police say 55-year-old Mohammed Monsoor Abuzaid and his 18-year-old son, Abdul Kareem Monsoor Abuzaid, were shot to death when they tried to defend their Utica Avenue business from robbers. Abuzaid's older son, also named Abdul, reopened the Utica Deli and Grocery to honor the hard work of his father and brother. Abdul says the store will be open 24 hours a day.

Local customers say they are happy to have the shop back, but are still in mourning over the tragedy. Regulars say the crime will not stop them from shopping at the store.

Councilwoman Darlene Mealy announced last week that she plans on starting a bodega safety program to install alarms in stores on Utica Avenue to prevent crime and alert neighboring businesses of harm.
