The man accused of stabbing two children, one of them fatally, entered a not guilty plea in court today.
Daniel St. Hubert, 27, is facing a number of charges, including murder and attempted murder, for what authorities call inhumane acts against two young children.
Police say St. Hubert stabbed 6-year-old P.J. Avitto and 7-year-old Mikayla Capers multiple times in the elevator of an East New York apartment building. Avitto died of his injuries, while Capers survived.
During his last hearing, St. Hubert stood up and asked to speak to the court, but was denied by the judge. After, he was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was sent for psychiatric evaluation. He was kept there until it was determined that he could be moved back in with the general population at Rikers Island.
St. Hubert's attorney asked the judge today for more time past the initial 30 days given to put in notice of a psychiatric defense. He says his client will be back in court on Aug. 8 for a video conference with the judge.
Investigators say they are also looking into whether St. Hubert is responsible for two other stabbings, including that of 18-year-old Tanaya Copeland. Police say she was stabbed more than 30 times in East New York. The other stabbing left a man injured in Chelsea.
