Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. delivered his annual State of the Borough address at Truman High School today.
Diaz focused on Bronx redevelopment and bringing new businesses to the area while improving local schools and the overall quality of life. One project that is in the works is a state-of-the-art hotel near Yankee Stadium.
The borough president noted his efforts to leverage $6 million for green industry and jobs through collaborations with Smith Electric and Fresh Direct. He says those plans are part of a larger goal to create a healthier borough.
Diaz also took the time to address the recent police-involved shooting of a Bronx teenager in Wakefield, demanding that the NYPD train officers better to work in the communities they serve.
"We cannot and we will not tolerate police misconduct," he said.
The borough president also plans to expand the "Peace in Our Streets" program to curb illegal gun violence and wants to use 30 percent of capital funds to improve education.
