If you smelled smoke this morning in New York City - you're not alone.

Two wildfires sparked overnight Thursday evening across the Hudson River on Englewood Cliffs in New Jersey.

Flames engulfed trees for hours.

High winds carried smoke from the flames across the Hudson into New York City.

The current drought warning across the city created fire risk conditions.

The National Weather Service has the city on a Red Flag Warning, or Fire Weather Warning, through 6 p.m. Friday. News 12's storm watch team meteorologists said that the Fire Weather Warning for the city means flames can spread easily and rapidly because of very low humidity, windy conditions and mild temperatures.

There are also four other wildfires burning in New Jersey.

Bronx residents reported to News 12 that they woke up Friday morning to the smell of smoke.

"I thought my building was on fire," one local resident said.
