A 17-year-old boy was volunteering at Masbia in Flatbush - a soup kitchen that serves thousands of people a week - when he was stabbed, according to officials.

Executive director Alexander Rappaport says it happened when a client was unhappy with the service. The client then yelled at the volunteer, who asked him to leave due to his behavior. Instead, he went outside and stabbed the volunteer.

The boy is expected to be OK, but the event brings up a question of safety for patrons.

The soup kitchen has a policy that people do not need to show identification upon arrival. Rapaport says this is for the privacy and dignity of clients.

When asked if they would consider changing the policy after the stabbing, Rappaport said there is no need.

He says he and his staff look out for one another and it was a random, one-time occurrence.

Masbia is open to serve the community and staff say this event does not define them.
