DMV warns New Yorkers of scam texts demanding payment

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is warning New Yorkers to watch out for scam text messages falsely claiming to be from the DMV.
The messages demand payment for supposed unpaid fines and threaten to suspend the recipient’s license or registration. Officials say it’s a phishing attempt aimed at stealing personal information.
“We never send a request to someone for personal identifying information via a text message,” a DMV spokesperson said.
The agency says the texts may contain misspellings or suspicious URLs and often originate from international numbers or unconventional email addresses.
Drivers are urged not to click on any links in these messages and to delete them immediately. Suspicious texts can also be reported directly to the DMV.
