Outside of your home, your car may be your biggest purchase. But how much you do you know about the car buying process? Kane In Your Corner went to the  Jon Bon Jovi rest stop on the Garden State Parkway to give drivers the car buying quiz.
“True or false,” News 12 New Jersey’s Walt Kane asked drivers, "If I buy a car, I have three days to return it.”
“True”, said Melissa Murphy. Asked why she believed that, Murphy said, “Because of the Lemon Law”.
Dawn Renzi disagreed. “Not true,” she said.
Renzi was correct. The statement is false.
Attorney Bob Silverman with the consumer law firm Kimmel and Silverman says this is a common myth among prospective car buyers, but there is no three-day return rule. “Basically speaking, you don't have the right to rescind if it’s a valid contract,” he says. Silverman says before you sign a contract, you need to be satisfied with the car and the deal you’re getting.
But how transparent does a car dealership have to be? Does the dealer have to show you the price they paid for the car?
“I don't think that's true,” Joe Zarillo said.
He’s right. Dealers are not required to disclose their actual purchase price, even if you ask them. “You can ask for anything you want,” Silverman says. “They don't have to give it to you.”
What about a car’s accident history? Must that be disclosed?
Dennis Duddie said “true,” while Erica and James, who declined to provide their last names, answered “false.”
They were correct. The answer is false, but it’s a bit of a trick question. Silverman says a dealer doesn’t have to tell you about a car’s accident history, but if you ask, they have to tell you the truth. He advises not just asking, but getting the answer in writing.
