DOE: More NYC schools offering halal meals in effort to expand cultural inclusivity

New York City Public Schools made the announcement on Monday. The Halal Program was started in the 2019-2020 school year. Initially, it included 32 schools across the five boroughs.

More city public schools will be offering halal meals to students, education officials say.
The city’s Department of Education says it is continuing efforts to be more culturally inclusive.
New York City Public Schools made the announcement on Monday. The Halal Program was started in the 2019-2020 school year. Initially, it included 32 schools across the five boroughs. 
That number is now at 43 schools. Many of the schools are located in areas with large Muslim communities.
In Brooklyn, there are 10 schools, and in the Bronx, there are six schools that are part of the program. 
The DOE assured families that each of these schools were inspected by IMMAs. They say the staff is trained to prepare all of the food to meet halal standards.
