A Queens teacher who was charged yesterday with sexually abusing two young students had also faced similar allegations while working at a Brownsville school 12 years ago, according to education officials.

A report by the Department of Education states that in 1999, two students at P.S. 184 claimed that computer teacher Wilbert Ortiz inappropriately touched them. Ortiz was placed on probation after an investigation into the allegations and transferred out of the school in 2000.

The news of Ortiz's arrest yesterday has led some parents at P.S. 184 to question why the 49-year-old wasn't let go.

Ortiz now faces two counts of sexual conduct with a child, among other charges.

In reaction to the arrest, Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott released a statement vowing to do everything in his power to ensure that teachers who face sexual abuse allegations are removed from the classroom.
