Fourteenth Street in Manhattan will become a bus and truck priority roadway thanks to the L train project, according to an announcement made by the city Department of Transportation.

The DOT says the bus and truck priority is a “new experimental transit improvement.”

The DOT says there will be a greater need for improved bus service along 14th Street and buses can't be as efficient if they have to share an already congested street with cars.

 

It says making 14th Street off limits to cars will help ease some congestion. Some transit advocates say it may even help discourage people from driving in the area.

It also announced that the bike lanes installed along Grand Street in preparation for the L train project will be permanent.

Borough President Eric Adams has called for more transparency, saying the last minute changes days before construction on the L train project is set to begin aren't good for credibility.

Thousands of commuters are preparing for the beginning of construction along the Canarsie line. Starting this weekend, L trains between Bedford Avenue and Manhattan will be running every 20 minutes on nights and weekends.
