DOT launches overnight parking pilot program to get trucks out of residential areas

The Department of Transportation launched a pilot program to give truck drivers a designated area to park in the borough using the Park NYC app.
It hopes to reduce illegal parking in residential areas.
Community members say trucks have plagued their streets by taking up parking spots and posing safety concerns.
"If anything happens on my block, I can't see because it blocks my camera," said Hedi Simmons, a Canarsie resident who says trucks are constantly parked on her residential street.
The Department of Transportation announced a one-year pilot program in Queens, The Bronx and Brooklyn to help tackle the concerns.
The DOT says the new program designated about 45 spaces for commercial vehicles, including tractor-trailers in specific zones to avoid illegal parking.
Areas on Flatlands Avenue between Erskine Street and Fountain Avenue will be metered as commercial vehicle only zones.
Truck drivers, using the Park NYC app, can park in eight-hour increments for $10.
"These will provide truck drivers with a safer place to park during mandated respirators and will reduce illegal overnight parking," said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.
The city says it is encouraging businesses to sign up for the Park NYC business account to make the parking transactions more seamless.
Simmons says the issue isn't accessibility for truck parking, it's laziness.
"They don't want to be bothered with getting from where they parked to here," said Simmons.
She says without enforcement, nothing will change.
