5h agoThe Department of Transportation and the NYPD gathered Thursday at One Police Plaza to announce how they’ll combat speeding and drunk driving during the holiday season.
Police say every precinct will be using speed cameras and radar detectors to enforce laws against speeding and driving while intoxicated.
They say police will actively patrol highways and local areas where speeding proves to be a more prevalent problem.
For those who still decide to drink and drive, NYPD Chief of Transportation Kim Royster says they will be arrested with no exceptions or excuses.
“No matter what you drive — a passenger car, pickup, sport utility vehicle, or motorcycle — if you are stopped for driving while impaired, you will be arrested. No exceptions,” said Royster. “Officers will be patrolling the city to get more drunk drivers off the road and save lives that might otherwise be lost. Traffic safety is public safety.”
Police say over 30% of crashes in New York state involve alcohol, and that lawmakers hope to pass a bill that would lower the legal blood alcohol concentration from .08 to .05 in the next legislative session.
