It's officially Fleet Week in New York City, and Brooklyn kicked off the celebration with a salute to arriving ships.
Dozens of people, including parents and students from 34 public schools around the five boroughs, stood on the waterfront at Fort Hamilton as the parade of ships arrived Wednesday.
An 11-gun salute sounded off as the ships crossed under the Verrazano Bridge on their way from Brooklyn toward Manhattan.
Fleet Week includes a number of events and tours of the ships, all open to the public.
Navy officials say the week is dedicated to celebrating sailors, Marines and those in the Coast Guard.
