Bad news for graffiti artists - the DSNY says that since the beginning of the year, it's responded to over 3,000 311 calls to clean up graffiti citywide, with half of those occurring in Brooklyn.
Since taking over the Graffiti-Free-NYC program in 2023, it has added three separate crew shifts throughout the morning, day and afternoon to spot and remove graffiti at the request of property owners.
"Unfortunately, Brooklyn is our busiest borough when it comes to graffiti. Everything looks nice with a fresh coat of paint. This is literally a fresh coat of paint, so it just makes everything look new. clean.- and if we can do this all over the borough, it's a win for everybody," said DSNY Assistant Chief Frank Lettera.
On Wednesday morning, crews worked to clear two separate sides of a warehouse in East New York, cleaning up tags, obscenities and giving the space some TLC.
And of course, that fresh coat of paint wouldn't be possible without the dedicated workers.
"I feel like a superhero- I put my cape on my mask on, I get to work- it makes you feel good- I take pride in it," said worker Malik.
DSNY says the best way to flag graffiti for cleanup is to call 311, as many times as it takes.
"Even if it gets resprayed, we will be back and clean it up again," Lettera said, adding, "graffiti can be art, can be beautiful - but not when it's someone's home or private property."
