East Flatbush tenants, landlord lock horns over heating
Tensions boiled over Monday as several East Flatbush tenants rallied against their landlord in a protest over heating and gas.
The tenants filed a lawsuit Friday against the landlord of 185 East 92nd St., saying they have been living without gas, heat and hot water for a month and a half.
But the building owner, BFC Partners, denies that there has been a disruption in heat and hot water service since it took over the building. The company says that it learned in September that the previous owner had made "unauthorized and unlawful modifications to the gas service, which forced all gas to be shut off on Oct. 4."
"While the new boiler is being installed, we have provided a mobile boiler on site to ensure these services are uninterrupted during renovations," a company spokesperson said in a statement.
In the meanwhile, the building's management company has given out hot plates, but that hasn't helped cool tenant's frustrations.
"We are all low-income, so if we put it to use, the hot plates, it's going on our electric bill," says tenant Artoria Cunningham.
