East New York seniors say the elevator in their apartment building has been broken for about two weeks.
Yvonne Oxford, who lives on the fourth floor at Marcus Garvey Senior Housing, says the outage has taken a toll.
“I’m scared to go outside because of the stairway,” Oxford said. “It’s really hurting everybody– people is bedridden."
The 74-year-old says her doctor advised her not to climb steps, but she was forced to do so last week.
"When I came back up, it was in a lot of pain. So, I had to ice it up and rub it down with ointment," she says.
Unable to go grocery shopping, she says she’s been living off the same pot of soup for nearly a week and stretching what little she has left.
A sign posted on the first-floor elevator says management is waiting on a technician to repair the lift, but neighbors say the technician has canceled twice.
“Why didn’t they get someone else to try and fix the elevator before it takes this long to get done?” Oxford said.
News 12 reached out to Shinda Management Corporation, which oversees the building, but it was not available for comment.
