Early childhood education took a major step forward in Flatbush, as the community celebrated a new school designed to include all learners. Educators and local leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of P.S. 6 Annex. The school is the first inclusive early childhood education center in Flatbush. The center serves students with autism and other special educational needs, featuring what are known as "AIMS" classrooms. They focus on acquisition, integrated services, meaningful communication and social skills. "We don't have a lot of institutions, schools, otherwise that really support that entire cohort and continuum of care," said Simone Hawkins, deputy chancellor of Early Childhood Education for New York City Public Schools. "What we did with the partnership of the Division of Inclusive and Accessible Learning is really develop something that is first of its kind." Educators said plans are in the works to expand the program with two additional AIMS classes that will create a true continuum from 3K to second grade.
