The family of a man killed in a motorcycle accident in Bedford-Stuyvesant announced Monday it is suing the NYPD over an alleged cover-up.
Relatives of 26-year-old Bobby Roman say he was struck and killed by a patrol car in July 2006 at the intersection of Spencer Place and Fulton Street. However, the plaintiffs argue the NYPD blamed a phantom vehicle for the fatal crash while it hid the truth. The family's attorney claims to have a signed statement from an eyewitness who allegedly told investigators a patrol car struck Roman and fled. The attorney also says 911 records prove his clients' case. The family is seeking money from the city to care for the victim's 8-month-old daughter.
An NYPD spokesperson maintains it is actively investigating the incident. Officials say there is no widespread cover-up and adds anyone who is at fault will be punished.
