The family of a Brooklyn motorcyclist who died in an accident earlier this month is raising questions about how the NYPD was involved in his death.
Dexter Walters' family is concerned after officers responding to the crash were placed on modified duty, they say. They want police to release the video of the incident.
Police originally had said Walters, 29, crashed his motorcycle in the early morning on Sept. 12 on Parkside Avenue while trying to pass between a van and parked cars.
Days after the crash, police said two officers from the 70th Precinct who responded to the scene were placed on modified assignment because of issues related to the department's policy on vehicle pursuits.
Family members are questioning whether the officers' apparent violation of that protocol could have had something to do with Walters' crash.
"I don't know what they saw, they saw something because they retracted their statement and these officers were placed on modified duty," says the Rev. Kevin McCall, of the National Action Network. "You short-stopped this family from justice. If you want to really give them justice, release the video."
Supporters of the Walters family say that the police have surveillance video of the crash that they have not released.
Walters and his girlfriend were expecting their second child.
The district attorney's office is reviewing the incident, as is the NYPD.
