A man known in the community as deeply religious and a leader of his church is facing sex abuse charges.
Community members say 44-year-old Matthew Gibson was a regular at Progressive Baptist Church in Bed-Stuy.
Gibson's family says he has been sexually assaulting his daughter for years. That daughter spoke out about the incident a few days ago.
"He took the opportunity after her mother passed away to take advantage of her in this way instead of protecting her," said Myia Maples, the victim's sister-in-law.
The 14-year-old victim told her family she was sexually assaulted in an alleyway behind the church.
The family says the abuse is a result of unchecked power. They are also calling on other victims of sexual abuse to come forward.
News 12 tried reaching out to Progressive Baptist Church for a comment but have not received a response.
Many former church-goers say they'll be protesting outside the church on Sunday at 10 a.m.
