The FDNY says firefighters doused a two-alarm fire at a steam power plant at 2701 West Sixth St. in Coney Island.
Authorities say the fire started in two of the three cooling towers at the plant.
The power plant supplies energy to five neighboring buildings and a shopping center.
FDNY says crews rushed to the fire around 9 a.m. They say there was an issue getting to the flames on the roof, which is where the towers are located.
Crews were eventually able to get the fire out quickly. No power plant workers were hurt. Two firefighters had minor injuries.
Authorities say nearby services were turned off as a precaution.
"Right now they're up and running and we're working with the management company, with the owners of the building, to make sure we keep those turbines up and running to produce electricity," says FDNY Chief Kevin Woods. "First, they shut down the elevators in all the buildings, and then we heard the station, the train and this platform is shut down."
Councilmember Mark Treyger says work that was being done at the plant could have contributed to the fire.
The fire marshal and Department of Buildings say the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities say residents are expected to have elevator service back up and running by the end of the day. The subway service has returned to normal.
