Dozens of people were evacuated Monday morning following a fire at the Alice V. Tomaso Plaza on Oakdale Drive in Middletown. It is a complex for seniors and disabled people.
The fire started around 8:15 a.m.
in the kitchen area of a unit on the first floor.
Officials say over 50 residents
were evacuated. There were no injuries, but one resident was taken to
the hospital as a precaution. The fire was contained within five minutes.
“It was a Monday morning, so
everybody was a little jarred out of their sleep,” says Susan Thomas, executive
director with the Middletown Housing Authority. “We do have an elderly
population, so I'm sure they were startled. We had to knock on some doors
rather loudly. I'm sure they were woken up out of their sleep."
The resident affected by the fire
is expected to receive housing assistance by the American Red Cross.
