A morning fire tore through a home in Windsor Terrace, sending firefighters rushing to the scene and forcing neighbors to evacuate.

The fire broke out just before 8 a.m. inside a home on East 4th Street, between Greenwood Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway. Firefighters were first called for a fire on the first floor, but the flames spread quickly.

Because of the size of the fire, a second alarm was called in. Neighbor video shows firefighters in the backyard, spraying water directly into the second floor as smoke poured out of the home.

One person was treated for minor injuries but refused to go to the hospital, officials said.

Neighbors described a frightening escape the building next door.

“I live with a roommate and before I went to check to see if she smelled anything, there was smoke coming into my room and the fire alarm went off and it said ‘fire, fire,’” said Jackie S., who has lived next door for four years. “I grabbed my coat and my purse and quickly left the house.”

A few neighbors also told News 12 that the person who lives in the home is a hoarder – making the situation more dangerous. Fire officials have not confirmed that detail.

The fire was brought under control just after 9:15 a.m. Fire marshals remained on the scene to investigate what caused it.
