A new fire safety app that can hear fire alarms and automatically alert household residents of an emergency received an endorsement from the borough president Thursday.
In the wake of a Midwood house fire that killed seven siblings, Eric Adams voiced support for the Fire Sonar app, which uses smartphones to listen to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
The app can also detect gunshots, according to creator Joseph Maximus Brown. Unlike competing products, it requires no additional devices.
When the app detects an emergency, it alerts the user and relays a message to family members, Adams said.
The app is currently available for Android phones. It will be available for iPhones in several days, according to Brown. The download is free for the first 100,000 users.
