A major winter storm is on track to impact New York City from Sunday through early Monday. Snowfall totals of 8 to 14 inches are possible across the city, with the heaviest snow falling Sunday from late morning through early afternoon.
Snow will develop quickly Sunday morning and intensify as the morning goes on, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible. Snow will stick right away with temperatures as cold as they are. Gusty winds, especially near the waterfront, could reduce visibility and create near whiteout conditions at times, leading to dangerous travel and significant disruptions. Wintry mix, ice, and sleet join the storm for Sunday night, making for even worse travel and disruptions. We are anticipating 8 to 14 inches of snow with sleet as well. Stay inside if you can, and stay warm as bitter cold will remain a major concern. Temperatures stay in the teens and 20s at the warmest over the next week. Lows will be in the single digits and teens.
Additionally, minor coastal flooding is possible late Sunday night into early Monday around high tide, especially in vulnerable areas such as New York Harbor and nearby back bays. While flooding should be limited and short-lived, the combination of heavy snow, additional sleet, extreme cold, strong winds, and coastal impacts makes this a high-impact winter storm for New York City.
What should you do now? Storm watch prep should be finished as we await this storm's arrival. Salt your driveway and walkway, have the shovel ready, and plan a day of inside activities as travel will be slow to halted throughout the worst of the storm. There will be an opportunity to run out and shovel around dinner time on Sunday. Snow will freeze into chunks of ice as temperatures are well below freezing. Any mix that does happen will make shoveling even more difficult and physically taxing. Try to get out to shovel a few times instead of leaving it all for Monday.
