New York’s first responders received well-deserved recognition in Times Square as part of National First Responders Day. The First Responders Children's Foundation hosted its fourth annual “Roll Call of Heroes” ceremony to honor the men and women who protect communities across the country.
“Today we celebrate and pay tribute to the very best among us,” Rev. Pamela Holmes, FDNY chaplain said.
The stirring sound of bagpipes kicked off the event which brought together NYPD officers, FDNY firefighters, paramedics and 911 dispatchers.
“In every community in this country, first responders are running into danger for their communities. They’re facing wildfires and hurricanes...these are the people who are sacrificing and serving to make us and keep us safe,” said Jillian Crane, president and CEO of the First Responders Children’s Foundation.
The foundation also provides essential support to the children of first responders - offering scholarships, financial aid and resources to families in need. At the event, local heroes like NYPD Chief of Interagency Operations Terri Tobin were recognized for their commitment.
“I actually remember responding to the ‘93 bombing of the World Trade Center and then again in 2001...being connected to the First Responders Children’s Foundation has been wonderful because they’ve been so supportive,” Tobin shared.
Tobin has served for over 40 years. She and her colleagues emphasized that they don’t seek the spotlight but feel grateful for the appreciation shown.
“We are out here serving every single day, and when you see a first responder, go up and say thank you because their hearts are always in the right place,” Tobin said.
