More than 100 residents were evacuated after a five-alarm fire tore through a Crown Heights apartment Saturday.
Fire officials say the fire broke out about 2:30 a.m. and believe it started in the elevator shaft of the six-story building on Eastern Parkway. Flames began shooting out of the top floor of the building. Officials say it took nearly 200 firefighters to bring the fire under control.
All the residents got out of the building safely, however, eight firefighters suffered minor injuries. The Red Cross was on hand to help residents with temporary shelter until they can be let back into their homes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
