Big Chief in Bay Ridge has been fined $5.9 million for selling cannabis without a license for over a year.
The Kings Country Supreme Court ruling came out Wednesday, spearheaded by New York Attorney General Letitia James and the Office of Cannabis Management.
Bay Ridge residents say they felt the ruling was justified, including one man who said it was "well deserved."
Edgar Kleydman, owner of Kaya Bliss, says he is also thrilled. His legal cannabis dispensary opened this fall. He says he had a number of problems with Big Chief. The No. 1 being that their product was unregulated.
"Everything that comes in and out of our doors is regulated," he shared. This process, a must, per the Office of Cannabis Management.
Kleydman also had concerns that Big Chief's product was being brought in from out-of-state. Legal dispensaries in New York must sell products made and vetted in New York state. Kleydman says that sales of product not from New York take away from legal businesses like his, as well as farmers and growers upstate.
Councilman Justin Brannan said that Big Chief was brought to his attention by his constituents more than any other establishment in his district since he took office in 2018.
Attorney General Letitia James called the court's ruling something that will hopefully "serve as a warning to anyone who thinks they can ignore our laws and endanger our communities.
