Expect a cold, wet start to the day, with some wet snowflakes or a brief rain/snow mix possible around 8–9 AM as precipitation begins. However, temperatures will rise fairly quickly this morning, and everything should change to plain rain by late morning or early afternoon across the five boroughs. For most of the day, it will be a chilly, steady rain rather than snow.
Road conditions in the city should mainly be wet, not icy. While the ground is cold early this morning, temperatures are expected to climb above freezing fast enough to prevent significant icing in NYC. The heaviest rain is expected tonight, which could lead to ponding on roads, reduced visibility, and slower travel during the evening commute. Rainfall totals around a half inch or more are possible by late tonight.
For those traveling today, areas north and west of the city — including parts of the Lower Hudson Valley and interior New Jersey — are under a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 AM to 10 PM due to a greater risk of light icing. That icing threat is mainly outside of the five boroughs.
After today’s messy weather, conditions improve quickly. Wednesday will be dry and much milder. Even warmer air arrives late this week into early next week, with temperatures running well above normal for early March. Temperatures may top 60 degrees on Sunday! While there will be additional chances for rain, it will fall as plain rain with no winter weather expected in New York City.
Also remember that Daylight Saving Time starts this weekend, so be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour when you go to bed Saturday night.
