Residents are frustrated by the sudden closure of the Metropolitan Recreation Center, a beloved gym and pool in Williamsburg.

The Parks Department cited “mechanical issues” for the closure but has not provided details or a timeline for reopening. Many members, unaware of the shutdown, have arrived to find locked doors and minimal information.

Membership at the center costs just $75 for six months, making it a rare low-cost resource in the heavily gentrified neighborhood.

The Parks Department said in a statement, “Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to safely reopening Metropolitan Rec Center to the community as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we encourage New Yorkers to use nearby alternatives like McCarren Play Center and St. John’s Recreation Center.”

Council Member Jennifer Gutierrez’s office says they have received dozens of complaints from residents and are pushing for more transparency and a clear reopening plan.
